Hailsham Chambers
The Story
Martin Spencer QC of Hailsham Chambers’s attended a doherty IT solutions Business Briefing aimed at identifying 10 ways in which small to medium sized business (SME) can save money through IT.
Even though the Chambers had an existing computer network and file server, it was both dated and lacking much of the functionality required by the Chambers. In addition to this and as a result of attending the Business Briefing, the Chambers identified that they could achieve considerable savings and increased Internet access performance by moving from their existing ISDN connection to broadband Internet service such as ADSL.
Doherty IT solutions worked with the Chambers to identify an appropriate solution to their business needs based on Microsoft’s SBS 2000. SBS 2000 is a comprehensive suite of Microsoft leading server based file and print, messaging, security and database products. SBS 2000 is specially tailored and packaged to meet the needs of SME business at a much reduced price to purchasing these products separately. SBS 2000 in conjunction with ADSL offered all the functionality and features required by Hailsham Chambers to offer their barristers improved shared IT services while reducing on going Internet connectivity, administration and support costs.

The Applications
- Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 including:
- Windows 2000 server for file and print
- Exchange 2000 for robust and reliable business messaging and collaboration including email, shared calendaring, task management, shared contacts and instant messaging
- Internet Security and Acceleration Server (ISA) 2000 is an Internet firewall and Web cache server that provides Internet security. Includes VPN support for secure out of the office connection to the network
- SQL server relational database management system
- Shared Fax Service to enable users to send faxes from their desktop PC’s through a shared fax modem or interface
- McAfee for virus defense for file server and networked PC’s
- Veritas Backup Exec to backup data and file

The Result
Hailsham Chambers now provide an up-to-date, fully functional and reliable shared computing environment to their barristers. In doing so, they have reduced their on-going communications, administration and support costs.
